Working from home can have positive and negative effects on our health. The Covid-19 pandemic initiated technological advancement in remote working to a point where this is somewhat now the new norm. Whilst the new age of working form home has birthed many positive lifestyle changes for employees, it has also highlighted some health concerns in other areas.

Here are some top-tips to include in your daily working routine:

Do not skip breakfast, Staying Hydrated, Limit caffeine, Limit Sugar Consumption, Eat protein with every meal, Avoid unnecessary snacking, Prep Meals & Snacks, Avoid working in the kitchen.

Studies show that Type 2 diabetes can be caused by a combination of a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. These factors can lead to insulin resistance, which, in turn, can cause type 2 diabetes to develop. Physical activity can reduce your risk and complications of diabetes, here we have some ways to change habits and increase physical activity throughout the day.

  • Develop a routine: A day at a workplace is often structured with set mealtimes or breaks, whereas working from home allows room for flexibility. Try to follow a routine to maintain structure in your workday, even if you’re at home, this will limit room for unhealthy patterns to occur.

  • Get up and moving more: Getting up to prepare a meal gets you on your feet, which is helpful even if only for a short while. Allow time for a 10 minute post meal walk at-least once a day.

  • Feel more satisfied: When you pay attention to your food as you eat, you’re more likely to notice when you feel full, and that helps you feel satisfied with your meal. You won’t be going back for seconds or snacks if you focus as you eat. It is crucial to have the time to really focus on your food instead of 'eating on the go'.

  • Make healthier choices: You will be more likely to choose healthier meals if you eat away from your work setup. Eating at a table encourages you to choose healthy meals that may be too messy or inconvenient to eat at your desk. Separating your work station from where you eat, minimises desk snacking.

Healthy choices - Healthy Lifestyle

Carbohydrates turn to glucose, exercise moves glucose from bloodstream to muscles. Physical exercise induces a rapid increase in the rate of glucose uptake in the contracting skeletal muscles. With this in mind, what we must consider when working from home, is that the increase in a sedentary lifestyle, coupled with poor diet means home workers are at an increased risk of developing diabetes. Luckily, we have prepared alternative meal choices, tweaked lifestyle habits and presented a plan to tackle this and lead employees to a healthy future. See PDF attached.
